The laws of physics control the world! Study physics and understand the universe. Physics explains how everyday-objects operate and discusses how they can be improved.

Learn how objects move under the influences of forces and energy, change how electricity works and the mysterious relationship between photons and waves. In year two, you will cover specialised topics such as cosmology, nuclei and fundamental particles and medical physics.

A Level physics gives you access to university to study a BSc in physics or other areas including engineering and medicine.

You follow the OCR specification.

First year (AS):

  • Unit 1: mechanics, motion, forces, work and energy
  • Unit 2: electrons, waves and photons
  • Unit 3: practical skills 1

Second year (A2):

  • Unit 1: the Newtonian world; The motion of the planets and stars
  • Unit 2: frontiers of science; The Big Bang!, medical physics and modelling the universe
  • Unit 3: practical skills 2

You will learn in a variety of ways, typically through discussion, group work, independent study, reading and research tasks. There is a balance between challenge and support. You play an active part in your learning and there is a strong focus on your individual learning needs.

You develop the skills necessary for further academic study, such as strong report writing, essay writing and study skills, including presentation skills.

You also improve the wider skills vital for success in further study or employment, including self-confidence, speaking in front of others, working with others, taking responsibility and managing your time. You benefit from individual support, including clear advice about higher education and careers.

Classes take place over four days a week between 9am and 5pm. We expect our students to be fully committed to their studies and attend all timetabled sessions. In addition, you have the opportunity to attend trips and visits according to the needs of individual subjects. There are many enrichment opportunities, enabling you to extend your learning beyond the bounds of your chosen subjects.

Formal assessment is through examinations and, in some subjects, through coursework.

The examination periods are in May/ June. A range of regular assignments, essays and class based assessments help you to develop your study skills for the next educational step.

Individual learning targets are set each term and you receive regular feedback on your progress in meeting these targets.

Applicants should have five GCSEs at grade 5, including English, with maths and science/physics at grade 6.
