This course will provide learners with the introductory skills and knowledge to start a career in sport or progress with employment in the sector. It will also prepare learners for higher or further education, through full-time or part-time study.

The objectives of the course are to help learners to:

  • choose a pathway and units that reflect their career or academic aspirations
  • enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector or progress to higher or further education or onto the Level 3 Sport qualifications
  • gain and develop essential skills that are valued by employers and higher and further education institutions
  • develop knowledge and understanding of the vocational sector

These qualifications consist of 3 graded mandatory units:

  • Participating in sport (6 credits)
  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise (6 credits)
  • Introduction to healthy exercise and nutrition (6 credits)
  • Strength and conditioning training (6 credits)
  • Development of personal fitness through training (6 credits)
  • Psychology for sports performance (6 credits)
  • Plan and set up an enterprising sports business (6 credits)

On successful completion of this course, you could progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Sport.

  • You will benefit from having a Level 1 qualification and holding a GCSE grade 3 in English Language and maths. Students who do not meet these entry requirements can complete a Level 1 equivalent and then progress back into this program.
  • Students will be required to take part in both theory and practical elements. To do this successfully students will be expected to bring with them appropriate learning materials such as note books (A4), binders, pens, highlighters and a ruler.
  • To support practical sessions, students will need to have appropriate indoor and outdoor kit; for indoor activities students must have appropriate indoor footwear.

You don’t necessarily need a first-aid qualification for a fitness instructor job. This course will teach you the necessary health and safety knowledge to ensure that both you and your customers can exercise safely during your time in the gym (or other workplaces).

However, a first aid qualification can give you a competitive advantage when looking for employment!
