Twenty-nine lucky Sports students from Activate Learning have just returned from an unforgettable, fully funded trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as part of the UK Government’s prestigious Turing Scheme.
The students, accompanied by five members of staff representing Merrist Wood College, Bracknell and Wokingham College, Reading College, Oxford College, and Banbury and Bicester College, spent their time in Brazil exploring the cultural, social and sporting landscape of one of the world’s most iconic cities.
The visit, which took place with partnership organisation, World City Links, a not-for-profit organisation which delivers cultural and educational exchange programmes and opportunities around the world. The trip was designed to enhance students’ global awareness and develop their research skills. As part of the experience, learners have been tasked with producing a written comparative study on sport in UK society versus Brazilian society. They’ll also receive a certificate of participation from the Federal Centre for Technological Education in Rio de Janeiro – a valuable addition to their future UCAS applications.
Rich Cultural and Sporting Itinerary
Throughout their time in Brazil, the students were immersed in a variety of cultural and sporting activities that highlighted the vibrancy of Brazilian life. From futsal and basketball fixtures with university students to learning the intricacies of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Capoeira, the group gained first-hand insight into the country’s rich sporting heritage.
In between their academic and athletic commitments, students explored many of Rio’s world-famous landmarks, including Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Olympic Park. They also visited the Ipanema markets, an educational art museum, and took part in a foot-volleyball lesson on the golden sands of Leme Beach.
One of the highlights was undoubtedly the opportunity to tour the legendary Maracanã Stadium and attend two professional football matches – an experience many described as “a dream come true.”
A Life-Changing Opportunity
Trip Lead, Kieron Duggan from Merrist Wood College said of the trip: “The trip to Rio was, without a doubt, a journey of a lifetime for our students and staff. It was an absolute honour to have had the privilege of planning and leading such an inspiring and unforgettable experience.”
The application process for the trip opened in January 2025, and students had to demonstrate both academic commitment and a genuine interest in cultural exchange to be selected. The Turing Scheme, which funds international placements for students across the UK, made this opportunity possible.
Trip manager Neil Axon, who accompanied the group to Brazil, spoke about the impact the experience had on the students:
“This trip wasn’t just about sport – it was about giving our learners the chance to grow as people. For many, it was their first time outside of Europe. They embraced every challenge with maturity and curiosity. Watching them represent Activate Learning on the international stage was genuinely inspiring.”
With memories made, lessons learned, and friendships forged, the students are now back in the UK ready to complete their research projects – and reflect on a trip that will no doubt shape their futures for years to come.
Level 2 Sports Coaching student, Riley Yarrow, said: “This was the best experience I’ve ever had and will ever have. Apart from all the sporting activities we got to take part in, a real highlight for me for the view from the top of Christ the Redeemer. It was spectacular!”
“I feel that this trip has really helped build my confidence in speaking to people I don’t know. Now that I’m back, the whole trip feels like a dream!”
