Sport

The sport industry in the UK is growing fast and provides a diverse range of careers in the exciting world of sport, fitness and coaching.

Whatever your interests and career aspirations, we have the right course for you. You could even develop your football skills and game understanding alongside a study programme related to working within a coaching environment!

There are endless possibilities, not simply for elite athletes – and the coaches they depend on! The community needs personal trainers and coaches too, whilst continuing your studies at university could lead you into sports development, nutrition, psychology, physiotherapy or teaching. You might also consider a role in marketing, journalism or social media.

We work closely with sports providers in our local areas. Our network of employer partnerships means, whichever course you choose, you will get practical experience in the sports, coaching and fitness sectors throughout your time at college. In addition, there will be employer visits and talks, trips, and valuable work experience that will allow you to put your skills into practice.

Every student benefits from highly trained staff, including a Coach Mentor, and we have an onsite gym filled with the latest sports and training equipment to help you keep fit and advance your studies.

There are three options to choose from:

  • Sport
  • Fitness
  • Coaching

We also offer a part-time Sports Massage Therapy Level 3 Diploma. This sports course will develop all the skills and knowledge needed to offer outstanding treatments, gain employment within the industry or manage/start your own business.

Sport Options

Our coaching option provides the opportunity to experience working with local primary and junior schools to facilitate coaching sessions, and a work placement at Reading Football Club.

If a career in fitness is for you, you could impact the lives of people of all ages and walks of life. You will learn how to be an approachable and effective motivator, encouraging people to reach their fitness goals, creating personalised exercise programmes, giving advice on healthy living, and carrying out fitness assessments.

Our sport option will combine the study of anatomy, physiology and psychology with biometrics, exercise, health and lifestyle. In addition, you will develop skills in fitness testing and training, sport and exercise massage, sports injuries and coach.

Industry partnerships

Sport Academies

Through our partnerships with Reading Football Club Community Trust, Bracknell Cobras and Playermaker Basketball Academy, you’ll have the opportunity to pursue a professional sporting career whilst studying to achieve a recognised qualification. The majority of students undertake a BTEC in Sport and Exercise Science or Sport, but you can also study A Levels alongside your training.

In 2019, we expanded our sports academy offer, to include Rugby Union in partnership with Wasps RFC, now known as Activate Rugby Academy. Delivered out of the City of Oxford College, it has become one of only eight colleges in the country to be given England Rugby Partner College status.

Football Academy

Activate Learning has an excellent track record of developing international athletes and coaches within football, in partnership with Banbury United FC and Reading Football Community Trust. Our students have gone on to have successful careers within professional sport, including Gareth McCleary and Matt Taylor who are both currently playing in the football championship for Reading FC and Bristol Rovers FC.

Basketball Academy

A member of Bracknell and Wokingham's basketball team has just been selected for Basketball England’s Under 18 squad. Myers Amoo-Gottfried, aged 18, is currently studying A Levels in History, Politics and Psychology. Alongside his studies, Myers has been training and playing for the college’s basketball team.
